The Art Museum was founded in 1950, first as part of the State Museum, from 1963 as part of the General Museum, and then as an independent unit of the National Museum of Montenegro. It is located in the Government House building. The permanent exhibition of the Art Museum includes representative works from several collections, with the idea of ​​presenting the development of Yugoslav and Montenegrin modern up to current art, and gaining insight into the artistic and stylistic changes in these areas spanning almost the 15th century. The exhibited works cover the period of the beginnings of the development of modern art in Yugoslavia from the end of the 19th and the middle of the 20th century, while the works representing the contemporary Montenegrin art scene belong to the period of the second half of the 20th century and the first decades of the 21st century. A selection from the Vukmanović gift collection, whose works complement the period of Yugoslav art, is published as a separate unit. The beginnings of Montenegrin modernism, and then the key stages in the development of the contemporary domestic scene, are presented as a separate segment. A special highlight are the memorial rooms dedicated to some of the most important figures of Montenegrin art - Milo Milunović, Petar Lubarda, Branko Filipović Filo and Miodrag Đurić Dado, whose works are presented with works from different phases. Pero Poček, Mihajlo Vukotić, Miloš Vušković, Jovan Zonjić and Vojo Stanić are represented with a slightly smaller number of works. The contemporary Montenegrin scene is represented by several generations of artists active today, which is the most dynamic part of the exhibition, which changes periodically.
